The famous Pro Wrestling NOAH split of mid-2000 caused All Japan's famous Triple Crown to be forcefully vacated, as Kenta Kobashi followed Mitsuharu Misawa's cause. Throughout the "
OCTOBER GIANT SERIES 2000" tour, a tournament took place to determine a new champion. Due to the strong All Japan/New Japan working relationship at the time, New Japan's Shiro Koshinaka returned to his original home for the first time in over fifteen years, competing in the tournament. It would come down to mentor vs. disciple, as the recently returned Genichiro Tenryu defeated his former pupil, Toshiaki Kawada, to win the title.
